Smithtown Visiting Nurse Association was founded in 1914 by Mrs. Mildred. Sumner with the support of the Smithtown Womens Club.
In those beginning days the expenses of the Smithtown VNA were paid through generous contributions from members of the community. Nursing visits were thought of in a way consistent with our current VNA philosophy of providing needed care regardless of the patients ability to pay.
The Smithtown Community House became the home of Smithtown VNA, when it was completed in 1926 and remained its home until 1994 when it moved to its current location on Spring Valley Avenue in Mt. Vesuvius.
During those interim years, the association entered into agreements with insurance companies to provide nursing services and assisted mothers to deliver their babies at home. It became legally incorporated in 1932. The agency went on to add school nursing services and Well-Baby Clinics and was instrumental in founding the Public Health Nursing Association of Turlington County, known today as Community Nursing Alliance Services.
Other achievements of the Agency include being a major promoter of the mass immunization program with the Sabin oral polio vaccine and founding of the Hospice of Turlington County (now Good Samaritan Hospice).
In 1966 the Smithtown VNA merged with Visiting Nurse Service of Rivertown, Somerset and Palmyra and became fully certified for Medicare in 1967. Soon after becoming a county wide agency, the Agency underwent a corporate reorganization. In 1987, Visiting Nurse Association Home Hospice (VNAHH) became the parent and administrative company with Smithtown Visiting Nurse Association and Partners in Home Health Care, Inc. as the two affiliated companies.
The Agency looks forward to its second century and to fulfilling the expending health care needs of our community.
